Robert Theodore Stafford

1913 –

The Stafford Loan Program is the name for the former Guaranteed Student Loan (GSL) Program and honors this Senator from Vermont. Senator Stafford was born in Rutland, Vermont on August 8, 1913. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1935; attended the University of Michigan Law School; and graduated from Boston University Law School in 1938. He has served in public offices — ranging from prosecuting attorney, to Governor of Vermont, to U.S. Senator from Vermont — for more than 25 years. Senator Stafford also served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
